What is a Virus or Malware?

A virus or Malware is a program or a piece of code that is installed onto your computer and runs against your wishes. Some viruses or malware can replicate themselves, allowing the threat to further infect your system, others are also capable of transmitting themselves across networks to infect other devices. You can get infected with multiple threats, each can be designed to do a different job, some will destroy data, others will damage system folders, stopping your operating system from working correctly.

The vast majority of viruses or malware that infect a computer will come from being connected to the internet or email however, it is possible to infect your computer by using an infected USB storage device such as a pen drive or external hard drive. Virus and malware removal can be harder depending on the type of virus you have.

Free vs Paid Antivirus Programs

Paid-for antivirus software

A large number of people opt to keep their computer secure with a paid for antivirus/internet security suite. These will usually include Anti-virus, Anti-malware, Anti-spyware, a Firewall & Parental Controls. The usual cost is somewhere between £20 – £60 depending on the program, with the license usually lasting 1 year for updates, keeping the software up to date against the latest threats.

Most software packages will come with licenses that support 1,3 or 5 devices with the option of including your smartphone or Mac.

Pros: Paid for services offer an all-round better package for protection usually coming with Antivirus, Anti-Malware, Anti-Spyware and a Firewall in an all in one style package. All parts are automatically updated giving you protection against the latest threats.

Cons: Are considered expensive, ranging from £20 – £60 per year, the per year costs usually being the main stumbling block for most people.

Free Antivirus Software

There are many free Antivirus programs out there, each offering differing levels of protection. In Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 there is Microsoft’s home built Antivirus program called Defender, popular alternatives include Avast, AVG and Avira Anti-virus. Unlike paid for equivalents most free Antivirus products do not come with Anti-Spyware, Anti-Malware or a Firewall with additional products required to replace these features if desired. Each product will also require independent updates to efficiently protect against threats.

Pros: Free Anti-Virus offers a good base level of protection to protect against virus only attacks.

Cons: Free programs lack some of the advanced features of their paid for counterparts. If you only use the inbuilt protection in Windows 8 or above, we would highly advise using a standalone Antivirus program at the minimum, due to the sheer amount of threats out there in the wild.
